Carpentry Quotation Format
A carpenter's quotation is different from an interior designer's. You are usually pricing individual pieces of furniture and repairs, often for customers who will compare your rate with a showroom price. The way to win is to show what goes into each piece, the board, the wood, the hardware and the finish, so the customer sees why a well-made bed costs more than a ready-made one.
This page covers how to quote carpentry work, including labour-only jobs, with a sample for furniture and repairs in a home.
Price each piece as its own line
Carpentry customers think in pieces: a bed, a study table, a shoe rack, five door repairs. Give each piece its own line with size and material in the description, and a single price per piece. "Bed 6 x 6.5 ft with hydraulic storage, 18 mm MR ply, 1 mm laminate, soft-close hydraulic lift" lets the customer compare your bed with any other quotation.
Repairs work better as small fixed prices per item, such as per hinge replacement or per drawer channel, than as hourly labour. Customers are comfortable approving a known number.
Material details to always write
- Board: plywood grade (MR or BWP), thickness, and brand or ISI marking; or solid wood type such as teak, sal or rubberwood.
- Surface: laminate thickness and finish, veneer, or paint and polish.
- Edge banding on exposed board edges, and its thickness.
- Hardware: hinges, channels, handles, locks and lift mechanisms, with brand and soft-close where included.
- Polish type for wooden items: melamine, PU or wax, and number of coats.
- Where the work is done: workshop-made and fitted at site, or made at site.

Labour-only carpentry quotations
Many customers prefer to buy material themselves and pay the carpenter for labour. If you quote labour only, include a material list: number of 8 x 4 ft plywood sheets by thickness, laminate sheets, edge band in metres, hardware pieces, adhesive and screws. Customers often buy too little or the wrong grade, and a clear list saves extra trips and delays.
Also write that you are not responsible for defects in material bought by the customer, such as warped boards or weak hinges, and that waiting time for late material may be charged.
Payment and timeline
For custom furniture, take an advance to cover material, often 40 to 50 percent, with the balance on installation. Give a realistic timeline per piece or for the whole order, and say whether it starts from the advance date or from final measurement. For repair jobs, payment on completion is normal.
Faster carpentry quotations
Carpenters quote the same kinds of pieces again and again with different sizes. In Quotely Pro you save your standard pieces and repair rates, copy a previous quotation, adjust sizes and prices, and send the PDF on WhatsApp. Larger kitchen and wardrobe projects follow the interior design quotation format, and repainting jobs the painting quotation format.
Frequently asked questions
What should a carpentry quotation include?
A carpentry quotation should list each piece with size, board or wood type, surface finish, edge banding, hardware brand and polish, plus repairs as fixed prices per item, transport and installation, advance and balance terms, delivery time and workmanship warranty.
How do carpenters charge for furniture?
Carpenters usually charge a fixed price per piece, which includes material and labour, or labour only per piece or per square foot when the customer supplies material. Repairs are often charged as fixed rates per item, such as per hinge or channel.
What is the difference between MR and BWP plywood?
MR (moisture resistant) plywood is suitable for dry areas like bedrooms and living rooms. BWP (boiling water proof) plywood resists water and is used in kitchens, bathrooms and other wet areas. The plywood grade should be written in the quotation.
What should a labour-only carpentry quotation mention?
It should include a material list with plywood sheets by thickness, laminates, edge band, hardware and consumables, and state that the carpenter is not responsible for defects in customer-supplied material or delays caused by late material.
How much advance do carpenters take?
For custom furniture, carpenters commonly take 40 to 50 percent advance to buy material, with the balance on installation. For repair work, payment on completion is usual.
